Book MOT NI: How to Book an MOT Test in Northern Ireland

Quick Answer:

Book an MOT in Northern Ireland on nidirect with your registration number, the last four chassis digits, and a card, or phone the DVA. A car test costs £38.

By Muhammad Rehan Iqbal, Founder and Developer of ShareCodeCheck.org. Checked against nidirect on 1 October 2026.

To book an MOT in Northern Ireland, use the nidirect online booking service or phone the Driver and Vehicle Agency (DVA). You need the vehicle registration number, the last four digits of the chassis number, a debit or credit card, and an email address and phone number. Tests take place at DVA test centres, not garages.

Who This Guide Is For:

This guide is for a private car owner in Northern Ireland whose MOT is due, or who has just received a DVA reminder. ShareCodeCheck.org is an independent guide, part of its UK official checks cluster. It is not the DVA or nidirect, and you book only on nidirect.

It does not cover HGV, taxi, trailer or driving tests.

How to Book an MOT Online in Northern Ireland?

Booking an MOT online means using the nidirect MOT booking service. Here is the process:

  1. Check your expiry date on the gov.uk MOT status checker.
  2. Open the nidirect booking service and start a new booking.
  3. Enter the vehicle details. You need the registration number and the last four digits of the chassis number.
  4. Choose a test centre, date and time.
  5. Pay by debit or credit card. Maestro debit cards are not accepted.
  6. Keep your confirmation. You may need it as proof of a booked test (see below).

The service also asks for a valid email address and contact phone number.

Book an MOT Test by Phone

You can book a vehicle test by calling the DVA booking line, except for multiple-vehicle bookings. The current number is on the DVA vehicle test booking page.

MOT Test Cost in Northern Ireland

A full MOT for a Class IV motor car costs £38.00, and a retest costs £29.50, according to nidirect’s vehicle test fees. The DVA sets these fees, so confirm the price on nidirect before you pay.

When a Car Needs Its MOT?

Cars and motorcycles are due an MOT from four years old, and then annually. The DVA sends a reminder, but you should not wait for one.

A valid MOT certificate from elsewhere in the UK is accepted in Northern Ireland. If you then test in NI, you get a new 12-month certificate from the test date, with no credit carried over.

Do You Need to Book? Temporary Exemption Certificates

Some private cars get a Temporary Exemption Certificate (TEC) instead of a test. It applies to cars first registered between 1 June 2019 and 31 May 2020, or between 1 June 2021 and 31 May 2022, that hold a valid NI MOT. These cars skip a test for 12 months after the current certificate expires.

TECs are applied automatically and you receive no paper copy. A car does not qualify if its MOT has already expired, or if it was last tested outside Northern Ireland. Check your first registration date on your V5C, and ask the DVA if unsure.

What If There Is No Appointment Before Your MOT Expires?

Book the earliest available test and keep checking for earlier slots. Waiting times differ between centres, so another test centre may offer an earlier date.

The PSNI has agreed not to penalise drivers with an expired MOT only if all of these apply:

  1. the vehicle is roadworthy and not under a SORN,
  2. it is insured,
  3. you can show proof of a booked appointment.

This applies only in Northern Ireland. The Association of British Insurers says a missing MOT does not necessarily invalidate a policy, but check with your insurer.

If you are within 10 days of your tax expiring without a test, nidirect provides a short notice appointment request form. You will need your registration number, booking reference, tax expiry date and preferred centre.

Check Your MOT Status First

Checking status is a different task from booking. The gov.uk MOT status checker shows your expiry date, and nidirect points to it before you book. NI test history covers only tests since December 2017.

The MOT in Northern Ireland is run by the DVA, not the DVLA. The DVLA handles car tax, registration and SORN. You need a valid MOT to renew tax, so see the ShareCodeCheck.org guide to checking vehicle tax.

Change, Cancel or Miss Your Test

You can change, cancel or view an appointment on nidirect’s online service. If you miss your test without cancelling, you lose your fee and pay in full for a new one. If the car fails, the retest booking service covers re-tests within 21 days of the full test.

FAQs

Yes, through the nidirect service. You need the registration number, the last four chassis digits, a card, an email address and a phone number.

How much does an MOT cost in Northern Ireland?

A Class IV car costs £38.00 for a full test and £29.50 for a retest, per nidirect.

Yes, an MOT certificate issued elsewhere in the UK is valid. A new NI test gives a fresh 12-month certificate from the test date.

How is booking different from Great Britain?

In NI, tests are done at DVA test centres through nidirect. In Great Britain, third-party sources describe independent approved garages. Cars are first due at four years in NI per nidirect.

Is this still the current booking process?

Nidirect’s booking guide was last modified on 9 June 2026, and I checked it on 1 October 2026. Rules can change, so confirm on nidirect.
